It is important to note that these photographs are not in chronological order. In the more recent photographs (#3 and #6 in particular, but also #1 to a lesser extent), Ian does not make such extensive use of the left-hand index finger. If Ian McEwan is reading this, could you (Ian McEwan) please tell me why you no longer use your left-hand index finger? Thank you for your participation, Ian McEwan.
This is entry 2 in my series exploring the life and times of famous "contemporary" novelists.

I can answer that for you. In 2007, while researching Patagonia for his next novel about someone suffering from giant lizard syndrome, he sadly lost the top half of his index finger in a helicopter accident. This enabled him to add 'intrepid' and 'adventurous' to his 'intelligent, thoughtful philosopher god' mien
i can't imagine ian mcewan ever flying in a helicopter, but i will take your word for it.
Sorry, he wasn't actually IN the helicopter at the time. He was pointing at the helicopter and saying, 'Oh a helicopter, look!' and he pointed just a bit too high and that's when it happened
smartest, best person ever
